About Brandon Oaks

Our sponsor, history and mission.

Brandon Oaks is a nonprofit Lifecare retirement community, sponsored by Virginia Lutheran Homes, Inc., and open to people of all faiths.

Established in 1966, Virginia Lutheran Homes – originally called Virginia Synod Lutheran Homes – serves approximately 450 residents, the majority of whom are from other denominations, in three Virginia locations: Roanoke (Brandon Oaks), Virginia Beach (Luther Manor), and New Market (Luther Crest).

Traditions more than 270 years old.

The land on which Brandon Oaks is located has special significance for Lutherans. A structure dating from as early as 1735 once stood on this same ground – the date found written in berry juice inside. Originally used by Moravians, among the earliest settlers in the Roanoke Valley, they shared the building with Lutherans for many years as a worship site.

With the historic building long gone, the Health Center was opened in 1973. Seeking to encompass and accommodate a broader range of lifestyles, services and care options, the Brandon Oaks Lifecare Retirement Community opened its doors in 1993.
